Educational excursion: L'Aquila Reale in the Apennines

A day to get to know the fauna of our woods up close

NB: The following excursion will be carried out in compliance with the anti COVID-19 directives. All participants must comply with the provisions that will be communicated by our association, keep the safety distances and avoid gatherings of any kind.

Lupo and Aquila, two fascinating animals long persecuted by man, fundamental pieces of biodiversity and apical predators both present in the very high Taro valley in the Parma Apennines are at the center of the two educational excursions of 27 and 28 June 2020.
Often little known, mythologized and extreme, wolves and golden eagles can come into conflict with human activities.
In these two days along suggestive paths with breathtaking views of the Apennine ridges between Emilia and Liguria we will deepen the biology and ethology of eagles and wolves, monitoring techniques and good practices of coexistence as well as learning to interpret the signs of presence of the traces of the fauna that we will meet.

Program

Meeting at 10.00 in S. Maria del Taro transfer by own means, to a nearby town (5 minutes by car) from here through paths of centuries-old chestnut groves, wide open spaces with imposing ophiolithic outcrops to arrive on the ridge from which we can admire with a 360 degree view of the Apennine chain to the sea. The position will be favorable to try to spot eagles and other birds of prey (bianconi, honey buzzards, pilgrims, buzzards, kestrels).
Along the way we will meet several recurring marking sites of the wolves of a family unit that we are monitoring and we will check the previously placed video traps, with practice on positioning and installation methods.

Cost

Contribution to activity expenses:
Adults over 12 years: € 15,00
(also participating in theexcursion the previous day the total contribution will be € 25,00 for both excursions)
Children from 7 to 12 years: € 10
(also participating in theexcursion the previous day the total contribution will be € 15,00 for both excursions)

What to bring

Trekking clothing suitable for the period a layers to better adapt to different temperatures, we recommend bringing extra cover to wear when we stay a long stop for direct observations. Trekking boots better if waterproof, jacket a wind and rain, hat, sweater or fleece, water bottle minimum 1 l, material for taking notes, binoculars, torch (preferably front), backpack for spare, water and lunch at the bag.

Difficulty level: E (hiking)

In a mountain environment, on paths they do not require particular technical skills, they cross wooded and open areas.
Trekking length KM10 - 300 meters in altitude.

The program is subject to variations, decided by the organizers on the basis of contingencies and weather conditions.
Pets are not allowed.
