Three years of fieldwork, 81 farmers supported, 16 regions involved, and over €50.000 invested in prevention tools. These are some of the results presented in the new Coexistence Fund Impact Report 2024–2026, the project promoted by the Association I'm Not Afraid of the Wolf APS to concretely support farmers who choose to live with the presence of large carnivores through prevention.
Born in 2024 as an experimental initiative, the Coexistence Fund has rapidly grown to become a support network active across much of the country. In three years, approximately 17.960 kilograms of feed for livestock guarding dogsbeyond 11,3 kilometers of fences and electrified wires, materials for making farms safe and numerous other tools useful for reducing the risk of predation.
"Coexistence cannot be imposed: it must be built," the association explains. "Behind these numbers are people, farms, and communities who have chosen to address a complex challenge by investing in prevention and the search for concrete solutions."
The result achieved in 2026, the year that marked the project's full maturity, is particularly significant. In recent months alone, the Fund has supported 50 breeders distributed across 13 regions and 30 Italian provinces, by providing over 11,8 tons of livestock feed, prevention materials and equipment for a total value of the materials alone of approximately 30.000 €, a significant figure for a small association.
The project is aimed specifically at those businesses that often struggle to access institutional support tools: small family farms, amateur breeders, educational farms, and rural businesses that coexist daily with the presence of wolves and other large carnivores.
In addition to material support, the Coexistence Fund also invests in training and the dissemination of best practices. In 2026, a free training course on wolf biology, prevention tools, and conflict management was organized, involving over 30 farmers from various Italian regions.
The results demonstrate that investing in prevention produces tangible results, but they also highlight a growing demand for support from the local community. More and more farms and local communities are asking for help in addressing the presence of large carnivores using effective and sustainable tools.
For this reason, the association is appealing to businesses, foundations, organizations, and citizens to support the Coexistence Fund through donations, sponsorships, supplies, and new collaborations.
Every contribution translates into concrete actions in the local area: a guard dog kept operational, a fence installed, a safer pasture, a farmer supported in prevention. Coexistence is built on the ground, every day, together with those who live and work in rural areas.
