In recent years, the presence of wolves in Trentino, and particularly in Valsugana, has returned to the forefront of public debate, often accompanied by tensions, conflicting perceptions, and growing polarization. In areas where the mountains are a daily part of life and work, the presence of a large carnivore requires concrete responses, based on effective tools and genuine dialogue between stakeholders.
In this context, it becomes essential to reduce conflicts and create spaces where the community can express itself, be heard, and actively contribute to building solutions. Coexistence with wolves cannot be addressed with ideological approaches or simplifications, but through structured processes that focus on knowledge, prevention, and participation.
It is with this aim that the company was born “Men & Wolves 2030”, a project promoted by the Brenta River Reserve Network in collaboration with I'm not afraid of the wolf APS, which offers a participatory process for constructively addressing the issue of coexistence with wolves.
The project includes a series of meetings and workshops aimed at local administrators, farmers, citizens, and stakeholders, with the aim of fostering direct dialogue with wildlife experts and professionals in the prevention of human-wildlife conflicts. Alongside information sessions—dedicated to wolf biology, behavior, and prevention tools—the program will offer opportunities for structured dialogue, aimed at gathering experiences, concerns, and proposals from local communities. A key part of the program will be the experimental phase, during which several prevention measures will be field-tested in selected settings, with effectiveness monitored and the results publicly reported. During the summer, a technical consultancy program dedicated to damage prevention in the livestock sector will also be available.
"Reducing conflict means first and foremost creating the conditions for people to engage in serious and informed dialogue," says Francesco Romito, vice president and communications director of Io non ho paura del lupo APS. "We need to move beyond conflict and bring the issue to a concrete level: listening to communities, implementing prevention tools, and sharing responsibility. Only in this way can we build sustainable coexistence over time."
The course is open to breeders – professionals and hobbyists – and to all people interested in the topic living in the Valsugana area.
